Shares of Jio Platforms, the telecom and digital arm of Reliance Industries, made their debut on the stock exchanges on 28 October at ₹1,358 on both the NSE and the BSE, a premium of 21.36 percent over the issue price of ₹1,119, the top of the ₹1,065 to ₹1,119 price band. The stock ended its first day at ₹1,419 on the NSE, up 4.49 percent from its listing price and about 27 percent above the issue price. At the close, the company's market capitalisation stood at about ₹13.05 lakh crore, according to Upstox. The initial public offering, which opened for bidding on 21 October, was a fresh issue of 27 crore shares worth ₹30,213 crore, with no existing shareholders selling. On 29 October the shares closed at ₹1,421.60, according to ICICI Direct, a little above the first-day close.

The argument that the listing is a vote of confidence is easy to make. A premium of more than 21 percent on a very large issue shows that investors were willing to pay up for a business with more than a decade of subscriber growth behind it. The offer was heavily oversubscribed, with reports putting the final subscription between about 16 and 22 times, and the stock rose further after listing instead of fading, closing near the top of its first-day range of about ₹1,357 to ₹1,424. Because every share sold was new, the entire ₹30,213 crore goes to the company instead of to existing holders, which gives it money to invest in network capacity, digital services and artificial intelligence. Because the offer was entirely new shares, the number of Jio Platforms shares in the market also rose by 27 crore, which spreads the ownership more widely. Akash Ambani told employees that the listing "is not our destination" but "a new beginning," signalling that the company plans to keep investing. The strong debut also arrives at a time when markets have been weak, which makes the demand more notable.

The counterargument is that the valuation leaves little room for error and that first-day gains are not a guarantee of future returns. At the closing price the company is worth about ₹13.05 lakh crore, and at the issue price its value would have been about ₹10.3 lakh crore by simple arithmetic from the figures reported at listing, so the market added roughly ₹2.7 lakh crore in a single day. Buyers at ₹1,419 are paying for growth that has yet to be delivered. Telecom is a capital-hungry business with fierce price competition, and the industry roundup by Digitimes noted that the IPO tests the company's 5G pitch. Retail investors, who often join in the excitement of a listing, can be hurt if the shares drift down. India's benchmark Sensex closed at 73,246 on 28 October, about 14.6 percent below its January high, and foreign investors have been selling Indian shares, so a sharp reversal in sentiment could affect the new stock. A grey market premium of about ₹248 was reported before the listing, close to the 21.36 percent premium that appeared on the screen, which shows that expectations were already high.

The listing matters for the Indian market as a whole. A company of this size joining the exchanges adds a heavyweight to the benchmark indices, which could force index funds and foreign investors to buy the shares, and it signals to other large companies that the public market can absorb big offers. It also gives retail and institutional investors direct access to a business that serves hundreds of millions of customers. For the Reliance group, a separate listing makes the value of its digital business visible to investors every day and could lead to a fresh look at the parent company's own valuation.

Jio Platforms has started life as a public company with a strong premium and a very large valuation. The months ahead, and the company's quarterly results, will show whether the early confidence was justified.
