ICICI Bank reported a 22.3 percent rise in consolidated profit after tax to Rs 16,333 crore for the second quarter of FY27, up from Rs 13,357 crore a year earlier. The results were published on 17 October 2026. Net interest income grew 15.9 percent to Rs 30,336 crore, and operating profit rose 20.2 percent to Rs 24,010 crore. Return on equity improved to 16.9 percent, from 16.6 percent in the previous quarter and 16.1 percent a year ago. The figures put the bank well ahead of the pace set by its closest rival, HDFC Bank, which reported a 4.7 percent rise in standalone profit for the same quarter.

The argument that this was a strong quarter is easy to make from the numbers. Total income rose 15.5 percent to Rs 62,505 crore, and profit before tax rose 21.3 percent to Rs 23,115 crore after a tax charge of Rs 5,803 crore, up 20.7 percent. Non-interest income, which includes fees and treasury gains, was up 15 percent at Rs 32,169 crore, so growth came from both lending and fee businesses, and the return on equity of 16.9 percent shows that the bank is earning more on the capital shareholders have put in. Expenses grew more slowly than income, which is why operating profit grew faster than revenue. Provisions, the money set aside for bad loans, were Rs 895 crore against Rs 910 crore a year earlier, so profit growth was not helped by lower credit costs alone, and operating expenses of Rs 38,495 crore rose 12.7 percent. Earnings per share rose to Rs 91 from Rs 74.80. At the end of September the bank reported advances of Rs 19.35 lakh crore and deposits of Rs 20.92 lakh crore, with total assets of Rs 32.93 lakh crore.

The counter-argument is that the quarter was not without weak spots. The capital adequacy ratio fell to 16.62 percent from 16.75 percent a year earlier, which means the bank is using up its capital cushion as it grows, although the common equity tier 1 ratio of 15.97 percent is still comfortable by regulatory standards. The share price had closed at Rs 1,397 on 16 October, up 0.55 percent, before the results were published, so some of the good news may already have been priced in. Asset-quality ratios such as the gross NPA ratio, the net interest margin and year-on-year loan growth are the figures analysts watch most closely, and they are found in the bank’s detailed filing rather than in the headline profit numbers.

For the wider economy, ICICI Bank’s results are a signal that credit demand and fee income remain healthy. A bank growing profit above 20 percent while keeping provisions flat suggests that borrowers are repaying and that lending is not running into stress. It also sharpens the comparison among private lenders, since ICICI Bank’s profit growth was several times that of HDFC Bank this quarter.

ICICI Bank turned in one of the stronger large-bank results of the season, with double-digit growth in income and a rising return on equity. The open questions are margins and capital, which the next quarters will answer.
