What the Doctors Said

The doctors said the deficiencies are affecting patient care and clinical training. “Facilities ranging from ventilators to the catheterisation laboratory are deficient,” said Chandrakanth Reddy. “Several diagnostic facilities and machines, including X-ray and endoscopy equipment, have not been working for months.”

Why They Protested

Reddy said a meeting with Health Secretary Christina Z. Chongthu had been held a week earlier but the association had not received any concrete assurance. “We have been waiting for seven days after the meeting, but there has been no proper assurance. That is why we decided to protest,” he said.

He said the junior doctors were ready to intensify the agitation in the coming days if the authorities did not respond.

What Is Not Known

The Hindu’s report did not carry a response from the hospital administration or the Health Department.
