The Amdavad Municipal Corporation sealed three commercial establishments in Ahmedabad for littering in public places and using banned plastic during an inspection drive, DeshGujarat reported on 12 October 2026 under the headline “Paan Shop, Eateries Among Three Units Sealed in Ahmedabad”. The civic body also issued notices to 57 more establishments and collected fines totalling Rs 51,300.

The drive was carried out by the corporation’s Solid Waste Management Department in the North-West Zone of the city, where it inspected around 75 commercial establishments to check for violations of solid waste management rules. The three sealed units included a paan shop and eateries, according to the report’s headline. Names of the establishments and of the officials who led the inspection were not given.

The numbers give a sense of the scale. Of about 75 establishments inspected, three were sealed, which is about 4 percent, and 57 received notices, or about 76 percent, by IndiaX24’s arithmetic from the figures reported. The remaining establishments, around 15, appear to have been found compliant or were not given notices, although the report does not say so. The fines of Rs 51,300 across the drive work out to a modest amount per establishment, which suggests that the penalties were aimed at changing behaviour more than raising revenue.

Sealing is a stronger tool than a fine. A sealed unit cannot operate until the corporation removes the seal, which usually follows payment of penalties and an undertaking to comply. Paan shops and eateries are common sources of street litter and of single-use plastic, which is why they are a frequent target of such drives. The corporation has carried out similar campaigns before, and an urban affairs site reported earlier a separate drive in which nine units were sealed.

For businesses the message is that inspections are under way across zones, not only in the old city. Shopkeepers are expected to keep waste in bins, avoid banned plastic and not litter outside their premises, and the corporation can issue notices and penalties and, in repeat cases, seal premises. Residents who want to report violations can generally approach the corporation’s zonal offices, though the report does not give contact details.

The Solid Waste Management Department enforces the city’s solid waste rules through a mix of notices, fines and sealing. The report does not say how the Rs 51,300 in fines was divided between the sealed units and the establishments that received notices, and IndiaX24 has not guessed at the split. The North-West Zone is only one of the city’s zones, so the figures cover a part of Ahmedabad and not the whole city. Readers should not treat the totals as citywide.

The drive comes during the Navratri and pre-Diwali season, when markets are busy and waste volumes rise. The reports reviewed do not say whether more inspections are planned in other zones, or whether the North-West Zone drive is part of a citywide campaign. IndiaX24 will report on further sealing drives and on any change in penalty rates announced by the corporation.
