He studied at St. Columba’s School and then took an economics degree at Hansraj College, University of Delhi. As a student he acted with the Theatre Action Group under the director Barry John. His father died in 1981 and his mother in 1991, and soon after his mother’s death he moved to Mumbai.

Career

Television and film debut (1988–1994)

Khan first appeared on television in the Doordarshan series Fauji (1989), playing a young army recruit, and in Aziz Mirza’s Circus. His first film, Deewana (1992), won him the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut. In 1993 he took the unusual step for a new leading man of playing obsessive, dangerous characters in Baazigar and Darr. Baazigar earned him his first Filmfare Award for Best Actor.

The romantic hero (1995–2003)

Aditya Chopra’s Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995), co-starring Kajol, became one of the most successful films in Indian history. It ran for decades at Mumbai’s Maratha Mandir cinema. Khan went on to define Hindi screen romance in Dil To Pagal Hai (1997), Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), Mohabbatein (2000), Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001) and Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003). These films also made him hugely popular with Indian audiences overseas.

Acclaimed roles (2002–2010)

Khan also took on more serious roles. He played a self-destructive lover in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Devdas (2002) and a NASA scientist who returns to village India in Swades (2004). In Chak De! India (2007) he was a disgraced hockey coach leading India’s women’s team. In My Name Is Khan (2010) he played a man with Asperger’s syndrome in post-9/11 America.

Comeback: Pathaan, Jawan and Dunki (2023)

After Zero (2018) underperformed, Khan went more than four years without releasing a film as lead actor. He returned in 2023 with Siddharth Anand’s Pathaan and Atlee’s Jawan, which both rank among the highest-grossing Indian films ever. He ended the year with Rajkumar Hirani’s Dunki. Jawan won him his first National Film Award for Best Actor in 2025, which he shared with Vikrant Massey.

Upcoming: King (2026)

Khan’s next film is the action thriller King, which reunites him with Pathaan director Siddharth Anand and is the first film he has made with his daughter, Suhana. The cast also includes Deepika Padukone, Abhishek Bachchan, Rani Mukerji, Anil Kapoor, Jackie Shroff and Arshad Warsi. It is due for release on 24 December 2026, and Khan has dismissed rumours of a delay.

Business Ventures

In 2004 Khan and his wife, Gauri, founded Red Chillies Entertainment. The company has produced Main Hoon Na, Om Shanti Om, Chennai Express and Jawan, and its visual-effects arm, Red Chillies VFX, works across the industry. Khan also co-owns the Kolkata Knight Riders, which has won the Indian Premier League three times.

Khan married Gauri Chhibber in 1991, and they have three children: Aryan, Suhana and AbRam. Aryan directed the 2025 Netflix series The Ba***ds of Bollywood, and Suhana made her acting debut in The Archies (2023).
