In the House

Joy held up the broken end of a baton that he said was used by police to beat students at the hostel. The Speaker directed the Watch and Ward to collect it for examination. LDF MLAs displayed photographs of the police action and of injured students.

The Opposition’s Case

Leader of the Opposition Pinarayi Vijayan said the Kerala Police should not be used the way, he alleged, the Delhi Police is being used to suppress protests demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. He said the protest outside the hostel pointed to planning, that flaming torches were thrown inside, that the Fire Force had to be called, that students suffered head injuries and that Youth Congress activists blocked the ambulance carrying the injured.

The Government’s Case

Chennithala said the Youth Congress was marching against Gyanesh Kumar when SFI activists jeered and threw bottles from inside the hostel, leading to a clash in which police officers were also injured. He said cases were registered against 75 activists each from the SFI and the Youth Congress.

He said an inquiry had been ordered into allegations about police officers’ social media posts, and that action would be taken against a police officer who allegedly attacked DYFI activists, in an inebriated state, during a protest against Gyanesh Kumar in Palakkad on Sunday. He added that the police force is the same as under the previous ten years of LDF rule and that the opposition had protested from “Day One” without giving the government a honeymoon period.

Background

On the same day, the Assembly passed a resolution seeking the removal of the Chief Election Commissioner, which IndiaX24 has reported separately.
