Jasprit Bumrah, Prasidh Krishna and Ravindra Jadeja will get valuable time in the middle when India-A face an injury-ravaged New Zealand-A in the third and final four-day game, which begins in Lincoln on Saturday, 7 November 2026. The match is the last red-ball preparation before the first of two Tests in Wellington on 19 November. For a bowling attack that has just lost Mohammed Shami from the Test format, the question is whether a few days against a weakened side is enough to get the senior players ready.
There is a strong case that the match will help. Bumrah last played in the Asian Games final on 3 October, and The Hindu reports that he has been preserved only for the red-ball leg of the tour, so he was not picked for the five-match ODI series. Prasidh has fully recovered from a hamstring injury, and his last outing was the ODI against the West Indies in Guwahati on 30 September. Jadeja arrives after two Ranji Trophy games for Saurashtra in which he took seven wickets and scored a hundred, and he lost his place in the one-day side. A majority of India's Test players have already played the A series to adjust to the windy and cold conditions, so the three will join a group that has had time on the ground, and The Hindu notes that the preparation for the two-Test series has been extensive.
The argument against reading too much into it starts with the opposition. New Zealand-A are depleted by injuries, so a spell against them will not recreate the pressure of a Test, and the 12 days between the start of the match and the Wellington Test leave little time to correct anything. Bumrah's omission from the ODI series was part of workload management, and every extra over in a four-day game adds to the load he is carrying into the Tests. Prasidh's recovery is still recent, and Jadeja's form in domestic cricket does not guarantee the same control on a fresh pitch overseas.
The match matters because India's pace attack is changing. Shami, 36, announced his retirement from Test cricket on Friday after 229 wickets in 64 matches at an average of 27.71, including six five-wicket hauls, and his last Test appearance came in the 2023 World Test Championship final. He made his debut at the Eden Gardens on 6 November 2013 and has been out of the Indian team since the 2025 Champions Trophy. The scale of the loss is clear from his record: he took 131 wickets in 35 Tests in South Africa, the West Indies and India at an average of under 25, including 5/28 in the second innings at Johannesburg in 2018. That leaves Bumrah as the senior figure in the bowling group, with Prasidh trying to establish himself as a Test option and Jadeja providing spin and runs.
India-A's final game gives three key players the match practice they need, but it cannot fully answer the questions about workload and form. Those answers will come in Wellington.
