Political Career
After his father’s death on 2 September 2009 many legislators wanted him as Chief Minister, but the Congress leadership refused. When the party told him to stop his “Odarpu Yatra”, a tour to console families of people said to have died of shock at YSR’s death, he resigned and in March 2011 launched the YSR Congress Party.
In May 2012 the Central Bureau of Investigation arrested him in a disproportionate-assets case, alleging that companies had invested in his businesses in return for favours from his father’s government. He spent sixteen months in jail before getting bail in September 2013. He denies the charges, and the cases are still being heard.
After narrowly losing in 2014 he walked more than 3,600 kilometres across the state in a 2017–19 padayatra. In 2019 his party won 151 of 175 assembly seats, defeating Chandrababu Naidu. His government was built around the “Navaratnalu” welfare schemes, which paid money directly to mothers of schoolchildren, farmers, pensioners and others, and a network of village secretariats and volunteers. His proposal to have three capitals in place of Amaravati was challenged in court.
In the 2024 election the YSRCP was reduced to 11 seats. His sister, Y. S. Sharmila, by then head of the state Congress, campaigned against him.
Personal Life
He married Bharathi in 1996, and they have two daughters.
