Early Life
He was born in Alappuzha into Malayalam cinema’s oldest film family. His grandfather, Kunchacko, founded Udaya Studios there in the 1940s, the first full-fledged studio in Kerala, and produced and directed dozens of films; his father, Boban Kunchacko, was also a producer and director. He appeared as a small child in one of his father’s films. By the time he was at college, where he studied commerce, the studio had closed and the family’s fortunes had declined.
Career
Romantic hero
The director Fazil cast him, at twenty, opposite Shalini in Aniyathipraavu (1997), a love story in which two young people give each other up for the sake of their families. It was one of the biggest hits Malayalam cinema had seen, and its lead pair became idols of the young. Niram (1999), about two friends who do not recognise that they are in love, repeated the success, and through the next several years he played the clean-cut lover in a long series of films, including Mayilpeelikkavu, Priyam and Kasthooriman. The formula wore thin, and a run of failures followed.
Break and return
After his marriage in 2005 he withdrew from films for about three years and went into business. He came back in supporting parts and ensemble films. Traffic (2011), a multi-strand thriller built around the transport of a donor heart, is regarded as the starting point of the new wave in Malayalam cinema, and he was praised for his role in it as a doctor with a secret. The comedies Seniors and Ordinary made him bankable again, and he co-starred in Manju Warrier’s comeback film How Old Are You.
Character actor
From the mid-2010s he sought out less comfortable roles. He played the husband of a nurse trapped in Iraq in Take Off (2017), a civil servant in Virus, and a criminologist hunting a serial killer in the hit thriller Anjaam Pathiraa (2020). In Martin Prakkat’s Nayattu (2021) he was one of three police officers on the run from their own force after an accident is turned into a political issue.
In Nna Thaan Case Kodu (2022) he transformed himself, with prosthetic teeth and a north Kerala dialect, into a reformed petty thief who takes a minister to court over a pothole; the performance won him a special jury award at the Kerala State Film Awards. The same year he produced and starred in Mahesh Narayanan’s Ariyippu, about a migrant couple working in a glove factory near Delhi, which competed at the Locarno Film Festival. Recent films include Chaaver, Bougainvillea, the police thriller Officer on Duty (2025) and the ensemble spy film Patriot (2026).
Producer
In 2016 he revived his grandfather’s banner as Udaya Pictures, three decades after its last production, with the film Kochavva Paulo Ayyappa Coelho.
Personal Life
He married Priya Ann Samuel in April 2005. Their son, Izahaak, was born in 2019, after fourteen years of marriage, an event that Kerala’s newspapers treated as public good news. He is a keen badminton player and has taken part in celebrity cricket and badminton leagues.
