He did not win, but the exposure took him to Mumbai.

Career

Years behind the scenes

For several years Arijit worked as a music programmer and assistant to composers including Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy, Vishal–Shekhar and Pritam. He learned studio production while waiting for his chance as a singer. His first Hindi film song, “Phir Mohabbat” from Murder 2 (2011), drew attention.

“Tum Hi Ho” and superstardom

Everything changed in 2013 with “Tum Hi Ho” from Aashiqui 2, which became a nationwide phenomenon and won him his first Filmfare Award. Over the next decade he became Bollywood’s first-choice voice for romance and heartbreak. His hits include “Channa Mereya”, “Agar Tum Saath Ho”, “Ae Dil Hai Mushkil”, “Raabta”, “Kabira” and “Kesariya”. He sang for almost every leading actor of the era, from Shah Rukh Khan to Ranbir Kapoor.

National Awards and global reach

Arijit won the National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer for “Binte Dil” from Padmaavat (2018). He won it again for “Kesariya” from Brahmastra (2022). His sold-out concerts around the world and his streaming numbers made him the most-followed artist on Spotify worldwide in 2024.

Stepping away from playback (2026)

On 27 January 2026 Arijit announced on social media that he would no longer accept new assignments as a film playback singer, writing, “I am calling it off. It was a wonderful journey.” He said he would keep making music independently. Songs he had already recorded were expected to keep releasing through 2026 and beyond.
