Jailer 2, the sequel to the 2023 blockbuster starring Rajinikanth, is set to open in cinemas on Thursday, 15 October 2026. Here is what has been announced so far.

The makers confirmed the 15 October date in late September. The Tamil film is expected to be released in dubbed versions as well. It arrives two weeks after Drishyam 3 and a day before a group of Hindi releases on 16 October.

Who is making it

• Director and writer: Nelson Dilipkumar, who made the first film
• Producer: Kalanithi Maran, for Sun Pictures
• Music: Anirudh Ravichander, whose songs and background score were a large part of the first film’s success

Cast

Rajinikanth returns as “Tiger” Muthuvel Pandian, the retired jailer. Ramya Krishnan, Yogi Babu, Mirnaa and Rithvik reprise their roles as members of his family and circle.

New to the cast, according to the film’s published credits, are S. J. Suryah, Mithun Chakraborty, Vidya Balan, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Anna Rajan and Jatin Sarna. Vijay Sethupathi is reported to have a cameo.

The first film was noted for its guest appearances by Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar and Jackie Shroff. Whether they return has not been officially confirmed.

Music so far

One song, “Alla Bollo”, has been released, featuring the actor Shamna Kasim in a dance number.

The first film

Jailer, released in August 2023, followed a retired prison officer who takes on a gang that smuggles temple idols after his son, a police officer, goes missing. It earned more than Rs 600 crore worldwide and was among the highest-grossing Tamil films ever made, restoring Rajinikanth to the top of the box office after several underperforming releases.

What to watch for

• Opening day: the first film had one of the biggest openings in Tamil cinema; trade observers will compare the sequel’s first-day figures with it and with Coolie (2025).
• Competition: with Drishyam 3 still running and Hindi releases due on 16 October, screens in the north will be shared.

Rajinikanth, who turns 76 in December, has continued to work at a steady pace, with Vettaiyan in 2024 and Coolie in 2025.

Cast and crew details are from the film’s published credits and reports by Onmanorama and WION. Details may change before release.
