The first film
Jailer, released in August 2023, followed a retired prison officer who takes on a gang that smuggles temple idols after his son, a police officer, goes missing. It earned more than Rs 600 crore worldwide and was among the highest-grossing Tamil films ever made, restoring Rajinikanth to the top of the box office after several underperforming releases.
What to watch for
- Opening day: the first film had one of the biggest openings in Tamil cinema; trade observers will compare the sequel’s first-day figures with it and with Coolie (2025).
- Competition: with Drishyam 3 still running and Hindi releases due on 16 October, screens in the north will be shared.
Rajinikanth, who turns 76 in December, has continued to work at a steady pace, with Vettaiyan in 2024 and Coolie in 2025.
Cast and crew details are from the film’s published credits and reports by Onmanorama and WION. Details may change before release.
