Shopify plans to launch Shop Pay, its accelerated checkout product, in India by the first quarter of 2027, according to Inc42, citing sources. The company has not publicly announced the timeline, so the date is a report and not a confirmed plan.
Shop Pay lets customers save their payment, shipping and contact details so that they can check out faster at participating stores. Shopify claims that it can deliver up to 50 per cent higher conversion than guest checkout, according to Inc42. That figure is the company’s claim and has not been independently verified.
India is a market where Shopify already has a base. The company’s relationships with Indian direct-to-consumer brands give Shop Pay a ready merchant base, which is an advantage over stand-alone checkout providers, according to Inc42. The report does not give the number of Indian merchants on Shopify.
The competition is established. Shop Pay will compete with GoKwik, Shopflo, Razorpay’s Magic Checkout and Cashfree Payments, according to Inc42. Those rivals offer more than accelerated checkout, including customer engagement and returns management, according to the same report.
The payment side is not settled. Shopify is in discussions with payment orchestration platforms to integrate different payment service providers in India, according to Inc42, and the report says that the payment methods and UPI support are unconfirmed. This matters because UPI, which processed 24.07 billion transactions in September 2026, as IndiaX24 has reported, is the dominant way that Indians pay online.
The merchant side is the key to adoption. A checkout that remembers a shopper works best when many stores use it, because a customer who has saved details at one store can use them at another. That network effect is general background and is why Shopify’s large base of merchants is described as an advantage in the report. The report does not give Shop Pay’s user numbers in India or elsewhere.
Pricing is also undecided. India-specific pricing has not been confirmed, and the final cost will probably depend on checkout charges, payment processing fees and the applicable Shopify transaction fees, according to the report.
Timing is an open question. The first quarter of 2027 runs from January to March, so the launch would be between about two and a half and five and a half months away from 16 October, a range that IndiaX24 has worked out from the calendar. Because the report relies on unnamed sources and the company has not confirmed it, the date could change.
There is a related step already taken. Payfuture launched a local payments integration for Shopify merchants in India in July 2026, giving access to local methods such as UPI and net banking, according to The Paypers and ffnews. That integration is separate from Shop Pay, and the reports reviewed do not say whether Shop Pay will use it.
Accelerated checkout reduces the number of steps a shopper takes at checkout, which matters for Indian online shoppers who often abandon carts when payment fails or when forms are long. That is a general point about online retail and is not drawn from the reports, which do not give abandonment figures for India.
IndiaX24 will report when Shopify confirms a launch date or announces its Indian payment partners.
