He studied in government schools in the area and took a Bachelor of Arts degree at A. V. College in Hyderabad. As a student he was active in the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad. Before entering politics full time he ran a printing business and worked in real estate.
Political Career
In 2006 he was elected as an independent to the zilla parishad from Midjil, and in 2007 he won a seat in the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Council from the local bodies constituency of Mahbubnagar, again as an independent, defeating candidates of the major parties.
He joined the Telugu Desam Party of N. Chandrababu Naidu and was elected to the Assembly from Kodangal in 2009 and 2014. After Telangana became a separate state he was the party’s working president there and its floor leader in the Assembly, and he made his name as the sharpest critic of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi government. In 2015 he was arrested by the state’s Anti-Corruption Bureau in the “cash for vote” case, in which he was accused of offering money to a nominated legislator before a Legislative Council election; he denies the charge and the case has continued in court.
He joined the Congress in October 2017. He lost Kodangal in the 2018 Assembly election but was elected to the Lok Sabha from Malkajgiri, one of the country’s largest constituencies, in 2019. In June 2021 the party made him president of the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee over several senior leaders. He rebuilt the organisation with padayatras and a campaign built on “six guarantees”, and in the election of November 2023 the Congress won 64 of the 119 seats. He himself won Kodangal and lost a second seat, Kamareddy.
He was sworn in at Hyderabad on 7 December 2023 as the second Chief Minister of Telangana. His government introduced free bus travel for women, subsidised cooking gas and free electricity up to 200 units for poor households, and a waiver of farm loans of up to two lakh rupees. It carried out a state-wide caste survey and passed legislation to raise reservations for backward classes. He set up the agency HYDRAA to remove encroachments on Hyderabad’s lakes, proposed the rejuvenation of the Musi river and a new “Future City” south of the capital. Demolitions under these programmes and the state’s strained finances have been the main lines of opposition attack.
Personal Life
In 1992 he married Geetha, a niece of the late Congress leader and Union minister S. Jaipal Reddy. They have a daughter, Nymisha. He is a keen football player and often joins matches at public events.
