K. K. Shailaja (born 20 November 1956), widely known as Shailaja Teacher, is an Indian politician of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) from Kerala. A high-school science teacher for more than two decades, she was the state’s Minister for Health and Social Justice from 2016 to 2021. Her handling of the Nipah virus outbreak of 2018 and of the first phase of the Covid-19 pandemic brought her recognition around the world. In 2021 she won her seat by the largest margin in the history of the Kerala Assembly, and was then left out of the new cabinet.

Early Life
Shailaja was born in a village in the Iritty area of Kannur, a district with a long communist tradition. She has often spoken of the influence of her grandmother, who nursed smallpox patients whom others would not go near and took part in struggles against caste discrimination. She studied science at Mattanur, trained as a teacher and in 1981 joined Sivapuram High School, where she taught physics and chemistry. The name “Teacher” has stayed with her ever since.
She was active in the party’s student and youth organisations and later in the All India Democratic Women’s Association. In 2004 she took voluntary retirement to work full time in politics.
Political Career
She was elected to the Assembly from Kuthuparamba in 1996 and from Peravoor in 2006, lost in 2011 and won Kuthuparamba again in 2016. She became a member of the party’s central committee.
In the government of Pinarayi Vijayan she was given health, social justice and women and child development. Her department began converting primary health centres into family health centres with longer hours, more staff and laboratories.
In May 2018 a cluster of deaths at Kozhikode was identified as Nipah, a virus that kills most of those it infects. She moved to the district, and the health service traced and isolated more than two thousand contacts; the outbreak was contained within weeks with seventeen deaths. The episode was dramatised in the Malayalam film Virus (2019).
In January 2020, when a new virus was reported from Wuhan, she set up a control room before any case had reached India; the country’s first three patients, students returning to Kerala, were detected, isolated and cured. Through the first wave the state’s method of testing, tracing, long quarantine and support for those in isolation kept deaths very low, and international newspapers and magazines profiled her. In June 2020 she spoke at a United Nations event honouring public servants. Later waves hit the state hard, and critics questioned the count of deaths and the purchase of protective equipment at high prices early in the pandemic, a matter examined by the state’s anti-corruption ombudsman.
She won Mattanur in 2021 by more than sixty thousand votes. The party decided that, apart from the Chief Minister, the new cabinet would consist entirely of fresh faces, and she became the party’s chief whip instead. In 2022 she declined the Ramon Magsaysay Award after consulting the party, saying the work had been a collective effort.
She contested the Vadakara Lok Sabha seat in 2024 and lost to the Congress candidate Shafi Parambil after a bitter campaign. In the Assembly election of 2026, in which the Left Democratic Front was heavily defeated, she lost at Peravoor to Sunny Joseph, the state Congress president.
Writing
Her memoir, My Life as a Comrade, was published in 2023.
Personal Life
She is married to K. Bhaskaran, a former headmaster and party worker who has chaired the Mattanur municipality. They have two sons.
