Political Career

Delhi minister and polio

He won Krishna Nagar in Delhi’s first assembly election in 1993 and held it five times in a row. As health minister he organised a single-day mass vaccination on 2 October 1994 in which more than a million children in Delhi were given polio drops. The Government of India adopted the model nationwide in 1995, and India was certified polio-free in 2014. The World Health Organization gave him a commendation medal in 1998. He also brought in one of India’s first laws against smoking in public places.

2013 and after

The BJP named him its candidate for Chief Minister of Delhi in 2013. The party emerged the largest but short of a majority, and he declined to form a government. In 2014 he won the Chandni Chowk Lok Sabha seat, defeating Kapil Sibal.

Union minister

Narendra Modi made him Health Minister in May 2014 and moved him to Science and Technology that November. He returned to Health in May 2019. He led the ministry through the first two waves of COVID-19 and the start of vaccination in January 2021, and chaired the WHO Executive Board from May 2020. He resigned in the reshuffle of July 2021, after the severe second wave.

Retirement

Not renominated in 2024, he announced that he was leaving politics after more than thirty years and returned to his ENT clinic in Krishna Nagar.
