After the spring 2026 elections in five states, the next round of state polls falls in 2027, when seven state assemblies are due for election. Wikipedia’s page on the 2027 elections in India lists them, with expected months that it describes as tentative, along with the incumbent party and chief minister in each state.
Five states are expected to vote in February or March. They are Punjab, where the Aam Aadmi Party governs under Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann; Goa, with the BJP under Pramod Sawant; Manipur, where the page lists Yumnam Khemchand Singh as chief minister without naming a party; Uttarakhand, with the BJP under Pushkar Singh Dhami; and Uttar Pradesh, with the BJP under Yogi Adityanath. Uttar Pradesh is the largest of them by far, and the Samajwadi Party’s campaign against the electoral roll revision, covered separately by IndiaX24, is an early sign of how heated it may be.
Later in the year, Himachal Pradesh is expected to vote in November, where the Congress governs under Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, and Gujarat in December, where the BJP is led by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel.
There are federal elections too. The presidential election is listed for July 2027, with the incumbent Droupadi Murmu and a successor to be decided, and Rajya Sabha elections are listed for four seats in 2027. The page does not mention the vice-presidential election, so it is not described here. The presidential election is decided by an electoral college of members of Parliament and of state legislatures, which is why the results of the state elections influence it.
The page does not provide the number of seats in each assembly or the exact dates when the assemblies’ terms end, and the sources reviewed for this article do not either, so the timing and size of each election are best checked with the Election Commission, which announces the schedule a few weeks before the polls.
The timetable puts several parties under test. The BJP is the incumbent in four of the seven states, which are Goa, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat, the Aam Aadmi Party defends Punjab, and the Congress defends Himachal Pradesh, on the basis of the table in the Wikipedia page, so the count of states is IndiaX24’s own reading of it, and Manipur’s status is not given.
Recent results offer context. The BJP won West Bengal and Assam in 2026 and the Congress-led alliance won Kerala, while a new party led by actor Vijay won Tamil Nadu, as IndiaX24 reports in separate articles on those results. Whether those trends carry over to the 2027 states is a question that the sources do not address.
Voters in Uttar Pradesh have the largest stake, given the size of the state and its weight in the Lok Sabha. The state’s politics ahead of the polls already includes allegations by the Samajwadi Party about the electoral rolls, and the BJP’s rejection of them, which are explained in a separate article.
The dates are tentative, and the calendar will become fixed when the Election Commission announces the schedules, with the first of the 2027 polls expected early in the year.
