Vir Das, born on 31 May 1979, is an Indian comedian, actor and musician. He began in stand-up comedy and then moved to Hindi cinema, acting in supporting roles in films such as Badmaash Company (2010), Delhi Belly (2011) and Go Goa Gone (2013). In 2017 he performed the Netflix special Abroad Understanding, and he won the 2023 International Emmy Award for Best Comedy Series for the Netflix special Vir Das: Landing.

He was born in Dehradun to Ranu and Madhur Das and was raised in Nigeria and India. In Nigeria he attended the Indian Language School in Lagos, and in India The Lawrence School, Sanawar, and Delhi Public School, Noida. After 18 months at Sri Venkateswara College at the University of Delhi he went to the United States and obtained a bachelor’s degree in economics and theatre, with a concentration in performance, from Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois. He was then accepted by Harvard University and the Moscow Arts Theatre for their joint Stanislavsky programme. His grandfather Brajbir Saran Das was a Padma Shri awardee from Bengal, and he has an older sister, Trisha, an author and documentary filmmaker. He married Shivani Mathur in October 2014.

He returned to India in 2003 and performed a stand-up show at the India Habitat Centre in New Delhi, which he later called a turning point. He hosted the Times Food Guide Awards and from 2005 television programmes on Zoom, including the late-night stand-up show Ek Rahin Vir, and worked as a corporate comedian before leaving the profession in 2007 to do stand-up full time. In 2009 his production company, Weirdass Productions, launched the open-mic series Ham-ateur Nights, later described as a meeting point for comedians who became prominent in Indian stand-up, including Rohan Joshi, Varun Thakur and Tanmay Bhat.

He hosted the CNBC-TV18 news comedy show News on the Loose and was cast as comic relief in the Hallmark mini-series The Curse of King Tut’s Tomb, filmed in India. His first Bollywood roles came in early 2006, including a small part in Namastey London (2007). With Ashvin Gidwani Productions he did shows such as Walking on Broken Das and History of India: VIRitten, which he wrote and directed, and he performed at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2011, 2022 and 2024.

On 25 April 2017 his Netflix special Abroad Understanding was released, making him the first Indian comedian with a special on the platform. A second, Losing It, followed in December 2018, and in 2019 he made the travel-comedy show Jestination Unknown and his American television debut in Whiskey Cavalier. He also appeared opposite Preity Zinta in a Fresh Off the Boat episode. In 2020 he made the one-hour special Vir Das: Outside In during the lockdown.

His work has attracted legal complaints. Two lawyers petitioned the Delhi High Court against his 2020 series Hasmukh, claiming it maligned the legal profession; the court dismissed an interim injunction, observing that “the very essence of democracy is that a creative artist is given the liberty to project the picture of the society in a manner he perceives”. After a monologue titled “Two Indias” at the Kennedy Center in Washington on 12 November 2021, Indian politicians filed seven police complaints against him, including for insulting India on foreign soil, though the performance received a standing ovation. In November 2022 the Mumbai police registered a case against him, two others and Netflix over a copyright complaint by the theatre producer Ashvin Gidwani, who alleged material from a previous show had been reused.

He hosted the 52nd International Emmy Awards in 2024. In December 2025 he announced his directorial debut, Happy Patel: Khatarnak Jasoos, produced by Aamir Khan Productions and starring himself, Mona Singh, Mithila Palkar and Imran Khan, which was released on 16 January 2026 to mixed-to-positive reviews. His memoir, The Outsider: A Memoir for Misfits, was published in New York by Simon & Schuster in 2025.
