Maqsood Mahmood Ali, known as Lucky Ali, was born on 19 September 1958. He is the son of the actor and comedian Mehmood. He is a singer-songwriter and is regarded as one of the figures who helped define Indian pop in the 1990s.
He broke through with his debut album Sunoh (1996), whose song “O Sanam” launched his career. It won him the Best Male Pop Vocalist awards at the Channel V Music Awards and the Screen Awards, and the Channel V Viewer Choice Award for Best Indian Male Pop Vocalist.
His follow-up albums included Sifar (1998) and Aks (2001), continuing the same style of soft vocals over guitar-led songs. He also sang for films. “Ek Pal Ka Jeena” from Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai (2000) won him the Filmfare, Zee Cine and IIFA awards for Best Male Playback Singer in 2001.
Ali has lived away from the film industry, on a farmhouse on the outskirts of Bengaluru, and his releases and public appearances have been few.
