The Union Cabinet approved a productivity linked bonus equal to 78 days’ wages for railway employees on 14 October 2026, at a total cost of Rs 2,009.61 crore for the financial year 2025-26. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the decision after the Cabinet meeting. About 11,40,770 employees are eligible, and each of them can receive up to Rs 17,951 for the 78 days. The bonus goes to non-gazetted staff, including track maintainers, loco pilots, station masters and other Group C employees, and it is paid every year before Durga Puja and Dussehra. The same Cabinet meeting also approved continuing the National Social Assistance Programme and a restructuring of IDBI Bank.

The argument for the bonus is that it rewards performance that the Railways can demonstrate. In 2025-26 the Railways handled a record 1,670 million tonnes of freight and about 7.41 billion passengers, and the bonus recognises the staff who ran the trains and maintained the tracks. The amount of Rs 17,951 is the maximum that an employee can receive for 78 days, and the total cost of Rs 2,009.61 crore, spread across 11,40,770 employees, works out to an average of about Rs 17,600 each. The timing, before the festive season, means that the money reaches workers when household spending is highest, and a payout to more than 11 lakh families is a significant boost to demand in towns and cities where railway colonies are located.

The counter-argument is that the formula behind the bonus has not been updated for a long time. The calculation uses a wage ceiling of Rs 7,000 a month, which has been unchanged since 2014-15, according to Angel One, and the Indian Railways Technical Supervisors’ Association has asked for it to be raised to Rs 18,000 plus dearness allowance. A ceiling of Rs 7,000 means that the bonus is a small fraction of the actual earnings of many employees.. One report dated the approval to 20 October rather than 14 October, but official and wire reports place it on the 14th.

The bonus is paid for the previous financial year, 2025-26, and the Cabinet approved it on a Wednesday, 14 October, within days of the festival. The decision matters for the government because the Railways are among the country’s largest employers and any change in pay or bonus affects millions of households. A predictable annual bonus also helps maintain morale in a workforce that has to run services around the clock during festivals, when passenger numbers are highest. At the same time, the demand for a higher wage ceiling shows how the unions are pressing for a bigger share of the gains from rising traffic. The Railways handled 7.41 billion passengers in a year, which is a heavy load for the staff. Freight of 1,670 million tonnes adds to that load.

The 78-day bonus will reach more than 11 lakh railway employees in time for the festival season. The bonus is a recurring annual decision, so the debate each year is about the ceiling and the number of days. The real discussion will be about the wage ceiling, which has not changed in more than a decade.
