Early Life
Vikram was born in Chennai. His father, known on screen as Vinod Raj, had run away from home to act in films and never rose above small parts; his mother was a government officer who became a sub-collector. He was sent to Montfort School, a boarding school at Yercaud, and then studied English literature at Loyola College, where he acted on stage.
While at college he was hit by a truck while riding pillion on a motorcycle. His right leg was so badly crushed that doctors considered amputation. He underwent more than twenty operations, was confined to bed and crutches for about three years, and has walked with care ever since.
Career
The long wait
He took the name Vikram and made his debut in En Kadhal Kanmani (1990). Film after film failed, in Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam. To earn a living he dubbed the voices of other actors, among them Ajith Kumar, Prabhu Deva and Abbas.
Sethu
The first-time director Bala cast him as a college rowdy who loses his mind after a beating and ends in a mental asylum. Vikram shaved his head, starved himself thin and grew his nails for the role. Sethu waited more than a year for a distributor and opened in December 1999 on a single screen; word of mouth turned it into a sensation. The character’s nickname, Chiyaan, became his own.
Star and actor
He followed it with a string of commercial hits, Dhill, Gemini, Dhool and Saamy, while taking roles few stars would touch. In Kasi he played a blind singer. In Bala’s Pithamagan (2003) he was a gravedigger raised among the dead, almost without speech, a performance that won him the National Film Award. In Shankar’s Anniyan (2005) he played a meek lawyer with two other personalities, one of them a vigilante killer.
Later work includes Mani Ratnam‘s Raavanan (2010), in which he played the tribal outlaw in Tamil and the policeman in the Hindi version, shot at the same time; Deiva Thirumagal (2011), as a father with an intellectual disability; and Shankar’s I (2015), for which he built a bodybuilder’s physique and then reduced himself to a wasted, deformed figure. He played the Chola prince Aditha Karikalan in the two parts of Ponniyin Selvan (2022–23), a nineteenth-century tribal leader in Pa. Ranjith’s Thangalaan (2024) and a former gangster in Veera Dheera Sooran (2025).
Awards
In addition to the National Award he has won seven Filmfare Awards South and several Tamil Nadu State Film Awards, and received the state’s Kalaimamani honour. He has served as a youth envoy for the United Nations human settlements programme.
Personal Life
He married Shailaja Balakrishnan, a psychology teacher, in 1992; she later advised him on the portrayal of mental illness. They have a daughter, Akshita, and a son, Dhruv Vikram, who is also an actor and appeared with his father in Mahaan (2022).
