Five South Indian titles are headed to streaming platforms this month, most of them in Malayalam. It’s a Medical Miracle, a fantasy drama directed by Shyamin Gireesh, began on ManoramaMAX on 15 October with Sangeeth Prathap, Sharaf U Dheen and Akhila Bhargavan, and it is premiering in four languages. Kappi Squad, a comedy-drama series created by Srikanth Mohan and directed by Belraj Kalarickal, arrived on JioHotstar on the same day, planned as a 100-episode run and dubbed in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi. Aasha, a mystery thriller by Safar Sanal with Urvashi, Joju George and Aishwarya Lekshmi, premiered on ZEE5 on 16 October, and the comedy Adinasham Vellapokkam, directed by A J Varghese, arrived on Saina Play on 16 October.
The argument that the slate offers a good variety is based on genres and casts. A supernatural mystery with elements of revenge, a series built to run for 100 episodes, a thriller with Urvashi and Joju George and a comedy set in an international school in a high-range region cover almost every taste. The cast of Adinasham Vellapokkam includes Shine Tom Chacko, Baiju Santhosh, Manju Pillai, Babu Antony and Ashokan, and the series Kappi Squad stars Rinosh George, Anagha Ajith and Diya Deepan, so well-known Malayalam names appear across platforms. The fifth title, Dorothy, is a Tamil crime drama set in the 1980s, written and directed by Karthik Subbaraj and starring Keerthy Suresh with Sananth and Rishikanth, about two childhood friends, Karthi and Subbu, whose bond is tested by the arrival of Dorothy.
The counter-argument is that the slate is dominated by smaller platforms and by one language, and that the biggest title is not confirmed. Four of the five titles are in Malayalam. Dorothy, the title with the highest profile, has a reported release date of 23 October on Netflix, but neither the streamer nor the makers have confirmed it, so viewers cannot plan on that date. A 100-episode series like Kappi Squad is also a long commitment, and it is not possible to judge the quality of titles that have only just arrived. Kappi Squad is planned for 100 episodes and It’s a Medical Miracle is premiering in four languages, which shows how much the platforms are investing in reach. The listings themselves give only the basic details of each title, and no reviews or viewing figures are available yet.
The slate matters because Malayalam titles make up most of this month’s list, and the dubbed versions of Kappi Squad in four languages show how platforms try to take regional shows to national audiences. For Karthik Subbaraj, a director known for his work in Tamil cinema, a streaming release for a crime drama set in the 1980s is a chance to reach viewers beyond theatres. For viewers, the mix of platforms means that a subscriber may need several services to see everything.
October’s South Indian streaming slate is varied and mostly Malayalam. Two of the titles arrived on 15 October, two on 16 October, and the fifth is reported for 23 October. Whether Dorothy arrives on 23 October or later, it is the title that is likely to draw the most attention.
