A small Kannada film with a new cast has become one of the biggest surprises at the box office this year, The Hindu reported on 8 October 2026. *Premada Oorali*, directed by Manoj Kumar, was released on 25 September 2026.

Numbers Behind the Surprise

Barring Rangayana Raghu, the film stars an entirely new team. Even so, it has collected about ₹25 crore on a budget of ₹2 crore, which The Hindu called unheard of in Kannada in 2026, and a lifetime total of ₹50 crore is possible.

Online, more than a lakh tickets have been sold every day since Sunday, 27 September.

Single Screens Back in Business

The Hindu said the film has revived theatres in B and C centres. Single screens in places such as Raichur, Kolar, Bidar, Madhugiri, Shidlaghatta, Ranibennur and Kadur are running to packed houses, some of them reopened after a couple of years.

In Bengaluru, often the toughest market for Kannada films, it has held its own against big releases, including Nani’s *The Paradise* and *Drishyam: The Conclusion*.

The Film

It is a “trademark simple movie” set against a village background, mixing a father-son bond, a relationship drama and the plight of farmers. Director Suri, of *Duniya* and *Tagaru*, said: “We might think the audience is craving an extravagant dish, but they might want some plain, tasty rasam. People are moved to tears, which means the emotions have worked.”

Why It Matters

The film’s run gives Kannada cinema a rare 2026 success built on word of mouth rather than big names, and shows there is demand for small-town theatre-going.
