Lokesh was born at Kinathukadavu, a small town south of Coimbatore, where his father worked as a bus conductor. He studied fashion technology at PSG College of Arts and Science, took an MBA in Chennai and worked for about four years in a private bank. He was a devoted fan of Kamal Haasan and taught himself film-making from DVDs and books.
A short film he made for a corporate competition was judged by the director Karthik Subbaraj, who encouraged him and included his next short, Kalam, in the anthology film Aviyal (2016). He resigned from the bank.
Career
Maanagaram and Kaithi
His first feature, Maanagaram (2017), followed several strangers through a single dangerous night in Chennai and was a critical and commercial success on a small budget. Kaithi (2019), with Karthi, also took place in one night, with no songs and no female lead, and held its own against a much larger film released the same day.
Master and Vikram
Master (2021) paired Vijay as an alcoholic professor with Vijay Sethupathi as a gangster who uses boys from a detention home; released while cinemas were still at half capacity, it was credited with bringing audiences back after the pandemic.
Vikram (2022), starring his idol Kamal Haasan with Vijay Sethupathi and Fahadh Faasil, linked its story to Kaithi and ended with the appearance of Suriya as a drug lord named Rolex. It earned more than four hundred crore rupees, the biggest success of Kamal Haasan’s career.
Leo and Coolie
Leo (2023), again with Vijay, about a café owner in Himachal Pradesh who may or may not be a vanished gangster, grossed about six hundred crore rupees. Coolie (2025), with Rajinikanth and a cast drawn from several film industries, was a stand-alone film; it was reported to have earned around five hundred crore rupees but drew mixed reviews.
Style
His films are marked by night-time settings, long action sequences staged with practical effects, old Tamil film songs used as counterpoint to violence, a recurring concern with the drug trade and an absence of conventional romance. He has acknowledged the influence of Kamal Haasan’s films of the 1980s and of Hollywood action cinema.
Producer and actor
In 2023 he founded the production company G Squad, which presented Fight Club. He has made brief appearances in his own films and took his first leading role as an actor in DC (2026). A sequel to Kaithi has been announced as his next film as director.
Personal Life
He is married to Aishwarya and has two children. He stays away from social media for long periods while writing and gives few personal interviews.
