Gold of 24-carat purity was quoted at around ₹1.5 lakh per 10 grams in India on Wednesday, 7 October 2026, with the festive buying season a few weeks away.

The rates

Published rates differ a little from one tracker to another:

  • 24 carat: between ₹1,49,570 and ₹1,50,380 per 10 grams
  • Month’s high so far: about ₹1,50,460 per 10 grams, on 3 October

One tracker showed a fall of ₹650 on the day. Rates also vary by city and by jeweller, and the figures above do not include the 3 per cent goods and services tax or making charges.

Silver

Silver has had a far more turbulent year. It reached a record of about 121 US dollars an ounce in international markets in late January and was trading near 61 dollars on 7 October, about half its peak.

What moves the gold price in India

  • International prices: India imports almost all its gold, so the domestic price follows the world price in dollars.
  • The rupee: A weaker rupee makes imported gold dearer even when the dollar price is unchanged.
  • Interest rates: Gold pays no interest, so it tends to do better when rates are low or falling. The Reserve Bank of India raised its repo rate this month.
  • Import duty: Changes in customs duty feed directly into the retail price.
  • Seasonal demand: Buying rises for weddings and for Dhanteras and Diwali, which fall in early November this year.

What buyers should check

  • Hallmark: Jewellery should carry the Bureau of Indian Standards hallmark with its six-character identification number, which can be verified on the BIS Care app.
  • Purity: Jewellery is usually 22 carat, not 24, and is priced accordingly.
  • The bill: It should show the weight, purity, rate, making charges and tax separately.

Those who want gold as an investment and not as jewellery can also consider gold exchange-traded funds, which track the price without making charges or storage risk.
