India’s captain, Shubman Gill, scored an unbeaten 223 as his side chased down a target of 406 to beat West Indies by eight wickets in the second one-day international on 30 September 2026. It was only the second time a team has successfully chased more than 400 in a one-day international.
Scores in brief
- West Indies: 405 for 7 in 50 overs
- India: 406 for 2 in 43.3 overs
- Result: India won by 8 wickets, with 39 balls to spare
- Player of the match: Shubman Gill
The chase
West Indies had posted what looked a winning total. India’s reply was built on a second-wicket partnership of 255 between Gill and Rohit Sharma, reported as India’s highest stand in a run chase. Rohit made 101 and in the course of the innings passed 12,000 runs in one-day internationals.
Gill batted through to the end. He had made a one-day double-century once before, 208 against New Zealand in 2023. His 223 not out is among the highest scores ever made in a one-day chase.
Where it ranks
The only higher successful chase in one-day internationals is South Africa’s 438 for 9 against Australia at Johannesburg in 2006. India reached their target with more than six overs unused.
