The Unified Payments Interface processed 24.07 billion transactions worth Rs 29.37 lakh crore in September 2026, according to data from the National Payments Corporation of India. Volume was up 23 percent and value up 18 percent from a year earlier. The average daily volume crossed 800 million for the first time, at 802 million transactions, and the average daily value rose to Rs 97,913 crore. The monthly totals were slightly lower than in August, when UPI handled 24.51 billion transactions worth Rs 29.82 lakh crore, but the daily figures set new records. The platform has become the main way Indians pay for everything from groceries to rent, and each new record shows how far it has spread.

The argument that UPI is still growing strongly rests on the daily averages and the year-on-year changes. The daily volume of 802 million compares with 791 million in August, and the daily value of Rs 97,913 crore compares with Rs 96,205 crore, so the platform was busier on an average day in September than in any earlier month. A 23 percent rise in volume over a year is a high rate of growth for a system that already handles billions of payments every month, and it means that the number of payments is growing faster than the value, since the 18 percent increase in value is lower. That points to more small payments, which is what a deepening of digital payments into everyday spending would produce. In July the system had handled 23.66 billion transactions worth Rs 29.88 lakh crore, which shows the steady climb of the volume over three months.

The counter-argument is that the monthly figures fell. Volume in September was about 1.8 percent lower than in August, and value was about 1.5 percent lower, and the value of Rs 29.37 lakh crore was also below the Rs 29.82 lakh crore of August and the Rs 29.88 lakh crore of July. Most of the fall can be explained by the calendar, because September has 30 days against 31 in August, and the daily averages rose. But the fact that value has stayed close to Rs 29 lakh crore to Rs 30 lakh crore for several months, while the volume has risen, means that the average payment is getting smaller. Reports also say that the monthly value remained below the all-time high of Rs 29.90 lakh crore recorded in May, so growth in value has been flatter than the growth in volume.

The numbers matter for the country because UPI is the backbone of retail payments and a source of data on consumer activity. A rise to 802 million transactions a day means that the infrastructure has to handle about 9,300 transactions every second on average, and the banks, apps and regulators have to keep it reliable. For small businesses, street vendors and households, the platform is a cheap and instant way to move money. The figures also give an indication of how consumption is holding up during the festive season, which began in September with the Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations.

UPI continues to grow quickly, with daily volume at a record, even as monthly totals dipped for calendar reasons. The next set of numbers, for October, will include the festival period and will show whether the pace continues.
