The Chase

Shai Hope led it with an unbeaten 102 from 45 balls, with six fours and nine sixes.

Sherfane Rutherford made 84 from 37 balls, with seven fours and seven sixes. The two put on 120 runs in 54 deliveries.

When Rutherford was caught behind off Kuldeep Yadav in the 15th over, West Indies still needed 72 from 35 balls. Romario Shepherd then hit 34 not out from 13 balls to finish the job.

Hope reached his century with the two sixes off Axar Patel that ended the match.

India’s Innings

India had looked well placed after making 249 for 5. Sanju Samson top-scored with 82 from 41 balls, including nine fours and four sixes.

The Bowling

Mayank Yadav gave India an early advantage with three wickets for 36 runs.

There was a costly miss, too. Mayank dropped a catch off Kuldeep’s bowling that would have removed Rutherford at the halfway stage.

Why It Matters

India had been on a winning run before this match. Coach Gautam Gambhir expressed sympathy for his bowlers afterwards, the Hindustan Times reported, saying: “Their careers are at stake.”
