India Win Asian Games Men’s Hockey Gold, Beating Malaysia 5-1 and Qualifying for the 2028 Olympics

India won the men’s hockey gold medal at the 2026 Asian Games by beating Malaysia 5-1 in the final on 3 October. Captain Harmanpreet Singh scored twice, in the 11th and 57th minutes, and Jugraj Singh, Hardik Singh and Shilanand Lakra added one each, in the 23rd, 42nd and 54th minutes. The win was India’s fifth Asian Games men’s hockey gold and the first time the team had successfully defended the title. It also secured India’s qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, and it made Harmanpreet Singh the first Indian captain to lead the team to two gold medals in the continental event.

The argument that this was a dominant performance is clear from the final. India scored four goals after Malaysia had equalised early in the game, through Shello Silverius, and the lead grew steadily: Jugraj Singh scored in the 23rd minute, Hardik Singh in the 42nd, Shilanand Lakra in the 54th and Harmanpreet Singh again in the 57th.. India scored its goals through five different moments in the match, and four different players, which suggests that the team was not dependent on a single source of goals. The gold also brought a direct qualification place for the Olympic Games in Los Angeles, which removes the need for the team to go through a qualifying tournament, and it came as part of India’s overall tally of 85 medals, including 21 gold, in fourth place in the table. The women’s team also won gold, on 2 October, according to the tournament record.

The counter-argument is that the road to the final was harder than the scoreline suggests. In the semifinal, India beat Pakistan 4-3 in what was described as a thrilling match and a scare, which means the team was one goal away from extra time or defeat 48 hours before the final. In the final itself, Malaysia equalised early, making the score 1-1 before India took control, so the match was not decided until the second half. Three of India’s goals came in the last 20 minutes, which suggests that the team needed time to find the gaps in a defence that had held out for the first half of the game. A tournament of this kind also does not include the strongest teams from Europe and Oceania, so the result says less about India’s position in the world than about its dominance in Asia.

Pakistan scored three times in the semifinal, compared with one by Malaysia in the final, so the margins in the two matches were very different. For Indian hockey the gold is important mainly because of Los Angeles. Qualification years ahead of the Games gives the team time to plan its preparation and rotate players, and it means the senior squad can focus on the world’s top teams in the coming seasons. For the country, it adds another title to a recent run of success for the team.

India defended its Asian Games title with a five-goal win and earned a ticket to Los Angeles. The close semifinal against Pakistan is the reminder that margins in hockey are fine, and the team will need to keep its edge for the Olympics.
