The Women: One Goal and a Wall
Lalremsiami marked her 200th appearance with the only goal of the final, the Indian Express reported.
It came in the 10th minute. Sakshi Rana threaded a pass into the circle and Lalremsiami struck it on the run with a reverse-stick hit into the top of the net.
After that India defended. China pressed for most of the second and third quarters. Goalkeeper Savita Punia saved a penalty stroke in the 24th minute.
The final started an hour late because the team buses were stuck in traffic. The win was India’s first women’s hockey gold at the Asian Games in 44 years.
The Men: Closer Than the Score
A day later the men beat Malaysia 5-1 in Kakamigahara to defend their title. The Hindu noted that the match was much closer than the scoreline suggests.
- 11th minute: Harmanpreet Singh scored from a penalty corner
- 14th minute: Malaysia equalised through Shello Silverius
- 17th minute: Sumit helped to keep out three successive penalty corners
- 23rd minute: Jugraj Singh restored India’s lead from a penalty corner
Hardik Singh, with Manpreet and Vivek Sagar Prasad, controlled the midfield.
The Road to the Final
The men had survived a scare in the semi-final, beating Pakistan 4-3 with a late goal from Abhishek.
What the Players Said
Hardik Singh called the title “one of our most important achievements”.
What It Means
Winning the Asian Games carries direct qualification for the Olympics. Both Indian teams can now plan for Los Angeles without going through further qualifying tournaments.
