The Indian Olympic Association named a 17-member contingent for the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games on 26 October, five days before the Games open in Senegal on 31 October. The squad competes in 11 sports and is led by table tennis player Syndrela Das and swimmer Dhinidhi Desinghu, according to The Bridge. Dakar is the first Youth Olympic Games held in Africa, and Wikipedia reports that the 14-day programme, which ends on 13 November, brings together 2,654 athletes from about 205 national Olympic committees, including the Refugee Olympic Team, in 25 sports and 153 events. P. T. Usha, the president of the IOA, called the Games "an important milestone for our young athletes", according to the same report.
The argument that India's squad is well shaped starts with its spread. According to The Bridge's list, 11 of the 17 athletes are women, who will compete in events such as the 100 metres hurdles, the 63 kg judo, 48 kg boxing, individual archery, windsurfing, women's singles badminton and the Changquan combined event in wushu. There are four athletes in beach wrestling, which is among the Dakar sports held at Saly Beach, two swimmers, two boxers and two badminton players, and Sresht Raju will ride in the individual equestrian jumping. Wikipedia notes that breaking and skateboarding joined the core programme at Dakar and that baseball5 and wushu were added as optional sports, so India has entries in a newly expanded programme. Dhinidhi Desinghu will swim the 100 and 200 metres freestyle and the 200 metres individual medley, and Tirthank Pegu the 100 and 200 metres butterfly, which gives India five swimming events across two athletes.
The argument for caution is the scale of the contest and the shape of the programme. Seventeen athletes are about 0.6 percent of the 2,654 competing, and the squad has no entries in team sports. Ten sports at Dakar, among them shooting, hockey5s, tennis, karate and weightlifting, are part of an engagement programme without medals, which means shooting cannot produce a medal for anyone. The Games also have no mixed team events for the first time, according to Wikipedia. The reports reviewed did not give India's medal totals at earlier Youth Olympics, so there is no verified baseline against which to set expectations for Dakar. Dakar was chosen unanimously on 8 October 2018 at the IOC Session in Buenos Aires, and the Games were postponed from 2022 to 2026, partly because of the pandemic's effect on the 2020 Olympics.
The Games matter because they give young athletes their first experience of an international multi-sport event, and the Indian squad includes swimmers, boxers and shuttlers at that early stage. For Africa, the first Youth Olympics on the continent is a milestone for venues in Dakar, Diamniadio and Saly, and Wikipedia notes that it is also the first Youth Olympics with a refugee team and the first with all registrations managed directly by the IOC. The Diamniadio Olympic Stadium, which holds 50,000 people, will stage the opening ceremony and the archery.
Dakar is a developmental event, and India's 17 athletes are best measured by personal bests and experience, not only by medals.
