Sindhu’s Daunting Start

Two-time Olympic medallist P.V. Sindhu, 31, opens against An Se-young and has lost all 10 of their previous meetings. Sindhu won the Japan Open Super 750 in July but lost to Thailand’s Ratchanok Intanon in three games in the quarter-finals of last week’s Arctic Open.

Lakshya’s Test

Lakshya Sen returns after a back injury and an underwhelming Asian Games individual event, where he lost in the round of 32 after beating Japan’s Kodai Naraoka in the team event. He was runner-up at the All England Championships this year, for the second time. He plays third seed Chou Tien Chen, who beat Ayush Shetty at the Asian Games.

Kidambi Srikanth, who won this title in 2017, opens against France’s Arnaud Merkle.
