Former India off-spinner R Ashwin has said it is “very unfair” that Yashasvi Jaiswal was left out of India’s ODI squad for the New Zealand tour, announced on 17 October 2026, The Tribune reported.
What Ashwin said
“If Shubman Gill is not playing the last two ODIs, then Yashasvi Jaiswal should definitely get that spot,” Ashwin said. He added that the omission could hurt the young player’s confidence at a critical stage of his career and called Jaiswal’s lack of opportunities across formats a problem.
Ashwin noted that Jaiswal has not played international cricket since his last Test, in Sri Lanka.
Jaiswal’s recent one-day record
The 24-year-old left-hander made an unbeaten 110 off 86 balls in India’s 3-0 ODI series win over Afghanistan in June 2026, his most recent 50-over appearance. He played that series as an injury replacement for Virat Kohli, according to the report.
What he has been given instead
Jaiswal is in the 16-man Test squad for the two matches in New Zealand and in the India A squad for the three-match red-ball series against New Zealand A in Lincoln, which is Test preparation rather than a route into the ODI side.
The squads
Gill captains the first three ODIs and Shreyas Iyer the last two, with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in both squads. The full lists are in our separate report on the ODI squads.
