A woman was killed and two other civilians went missing after a suspected militant ambush in Manipur’s Kamjong district on the evening of 15 October 2026, according to the Assam Tribune and India Today NE. The victim was identified as Hatneikim Haokip, and her husband, Jangkhongam Haokip, was injured. Two motorcycles carrying four villagers were ambushed between Molnoi and Phaikoh, according to the reports.

Deputy Chief Minister Nemcha Kipgen condemned the attack in a statement issued from Kangpokpi, calling it a grave criminal act. She said: ‘Violence against innocent civilians achieves nothing and harms everyone,’ and urged the district administration to maintain law and order, investigate swiftly and identify and arrest those responsible, according to India Today NE. She appealed to community leaders, young people and citizens to remain calm, exercise restraint and reject rumours and provocations.

The statement highlighted the two missing civilians, and Kuki community organisations were demanding action, according to India Today NE. The police had not issued an official statement when the report was written, and the reports reviewed do not say who carried out the ambush or whether the missing people have been found.

The attack followed days of violence in three hill districts. Between the night of 9 October and the morning of 11 October, Kamjong, Ukhrul and Kangpokpi saw a cycle of ambush, arson and sustained gunfire, according to Northeast News, an outlet whose article is an analytical piece and whose account IndiaX24 attributes to it.

That account says that the violence began near the Chassad police station in Kamjong, when security forces detained local village volunteers and gunfire followed, and that a 42-year-old Kuki woman, Domkhonei Touthang, was killed. Retaliation followed in the three districts within hours. At least nine deaths are officially recorded, according to the article, though unverified accounts from the border suggest that the toll may be eleven. The victims named include Sandeep Rai, a farmer of Nepali origin who was ambushed in Ukhrul, and three Naga village guards in Kangpokpi.

The communities involved are Kuki and Naga, according to the article. IndiaX24 reports the figures as the outlet’s account, because the reports reviewed do not include an official casualty list. The article also describes the Assam Rifles as having provided neutral, service-oriented operations during the episode, which is the author’s opinion.

The Imphal Times reported separate calls for strikes. A group named CorCom called a 12-hour statewide shutdown on 15 October to mark what it calls National Black Day, in opposition to Manipur’s 1949 merger with India, according to the headlines. The group’s name, its aims and the shutdown’s effect were not opened in the reports, and a second shutdown call by another group, SOREPA, also appeared for the same date.

The sources reviewed do not describe the current security arrangements in the three districts, such as curfews or internet restrictions.

The reports are consistent on the main facts of the 15 October ambush, a woman killed, her husband injured and two people missing, but they differ in scale from the longer account of the earlier days. The Assam Tribune’s headline refers to a woman killed and two missing after a suspected militant ambush, and India Today NE gives the names of the couple. Neither report assigns responsibility, and IndiaX24 does not do so either.

The Deputy Chief Minister’s appeal to reject rumours is a response to a pattern in which false claims spread quickly after attacks. That is a general observation and not a finding of the reports, which do not describe any specific rumour. Readers should rely on official statements and established news outlets.

IndiaX24 will report developments in the investigation and any official casualty figures.
