The Ministry of Defence has signed a contract worth Rs 661.50 crore with BrahMos Aerospace Private Limited for the supply of fire control systems and launchers for the BrahMos missile on Indian Navy warships. The agreement was signed in New Delhi on Monday, 5 October 2026, in the presence of the Defence Secretary, Rajesh Kumar Singh.
What the contract covers
- Equipment: BrahMos fire control systems, which compute targeting data and manage the firing sequence, and the launchers from which the missiles are fired.
- Where it will go: on Navy ships fitted with the BrahMos weapon system.
- Value: Rs 661.50 crore.
- Supplier: BrahMos Aerospace, the India–Russia joint venture that makes the missile.
Made in India
The contract falls under the “Buy (Indian-IDDM)” category of defence procurement, which stands for Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured and is the highest priority category under the government’s purchasing rules. According to the ministry, the equipment will have at least 68 per cent indigenous content, and the work will involve a number of Indian companies, including small and medium enterprises. It is expected to generate employment over a period of three years.
Why it matters
BrahMos is a supersonic cruise missile that can strike targets on land and at sea at long range. It is the Navy’s main surface-to-surface missile and is fitted to many of its frontline destroyers and frigates. The missile takes its name from two rivers, the Brahmaputra and the Moskva.
The order is part of a steady series of purchases to equip new and existing warships with the system. India has also exported the missile: the Philippines became its first foreign customer under a deal signed in 2022.
The wider picture
The government has been steering a growing share of its defence budget towards domestic suppliers, and the armed forces have placed a number of large orders for missiles, ships and aircraft with Indian manufacturers in recent years. The BrahMos was reported to have been used in Operation Sindoor in May 2025.
