A Harsh Welcome
Rekha was a teenager from Madras when Sawan Bhadon was released in 1970.
Hindi cinema, the newspaper wrote, wasted no time telling her what was wrong with her: too heavy, too dark, her Hindi not good enough. The label “ugly duckling” followed her from film to film.
Film magazines went through her appearance feature by feature, in a language she was still learning.
The Transformation
She could argue with the verdict, or make it irrelevant. She chose the second.
She worked on her looks, her Hindi and her diction. She learned how the camera read her, what a costume does to a character, and how make-up changes a face.
Above all, the piece argued, she learned to use her image, not accept the one she was handed.
1978
By the time of Ghar and Muqaddar Ka Sikandar in 1978, a new Rekha had arrived, and the industry that had criticised her so readily had begun to see her appeal.
Reinvention as a Habit
She did not reinvent herself only once. Across five decades she has kept changing how audiences see her.
Today, the newspaper noted, she can walk into a wedding in a Kanjeevaram sari and hold the room.
