What Drove the Rally

Information technology shares led the way after Tata Consultancy Services reported a 15 percent rise in net profit for the July–September quarter, to ₹13,884 crore.

Adani Ports, Infosys, HCL Tech, Larsen & Toubro and HDFC Bank were also among the gainers. Reliance Industries was the only one of the 30 Sensex companies to fall.

“Domestic equities staged a relief rally, supported by value buying and short covering after the recent sharp correction,” said Vinod Nair, head of research at Geojit Investments.

The Oil Factor

Crude prices eased after indications that US military action against Iran is unlikely before the American midterm elections. Lower oil prices help India, which imports most of its crude.

The Rupee

The rupee opened at 96.74, moved between 96.51 and 96.77, and closed at 96.72, up 16 paise. It had fallen 13 paise to 96.88 the previous day.

Dilip Parmar of HDFC Securities said the currency gained after three days of weakness, in line with other Asian currencies. He put near-term resistance for the dollar at around 97 rupees and support at 95.30.

Likely intervention by the Reserve Bank of India also supported the rupee, traders said.
