The Sensex closed at 74,151.04, up 1.24%, and the Nifty 50 at 22,936.75, up 1.05%, on 29 October 2026. ADANIPORTS led the gainers (6.29%) while HEROMOTOCO was the biggest loser (-4.09%) among large-cap stocks.
Indian equities rebounded sharply on Thursday after Wednesday’s losses. Reports attributed the move to a mix of factors: the US Federal Reserve holding interest rates, a return of foreign investors, a firmer rupee and hopes of tax relief on long-term equity gains. Realty was the top sectoral gainer, and FMCG and PSU bank stocks also led the rally, according to closing-bell reports.
The BSE-listed universe added nearly ₹5 lakh crore in market value during the session, Zee Business reported.

Rupee, flows and global cues
Fed: The US Federal Reserve kept its benchmark rate in the 3.75–4% range. Two policymakers wanted a hike, and the decision did not signal an easing cycle, NewsDrum reported. US Treasury yields eased in overseas trade but stayed elevated.
Foreign flows: Foreign institutional investors were net buyers of about ₹872 crore on Wednesday, while domestic institutions bought about ₹643 crore. Foreign investors had been net sellers for much of October.
Rupee: The rupee gained 11 paise to around 95.17 per dollar in early trade, against Wednesday’s close of 95.28.
Tax hopes: Markets also leaned on speculation that the government could cut taxes on long-term equity gains. No reduction has been announced.
What to watch tomorrow
Traders will look to the remaining Q2 FY27 earnings, whether foreign investors keep buying after a month of selling, the rupee’s hold near the 95 level and how global bond yields behave after the Fed’s hold. With a large part of Thursday’s gain driven by short covering and tax hopes, follow-through is not guaranteed.
